Washington Township is home of Fort Ancient, a prehistoric earthwork built by native Mound Builders 2, 000 years ago. The Fort includes 18,000 feet of earthen walls within 100 acres. The area is named for George Washington, the first president of the United States.
Located in east central Warren County east of the village of Lebanon, Washington Township covers 34 miles in the scenic Little Miami River Valley. Formed in 1818 from parts of Salem and Wayne Township, of all the 11 townships in Warren County, Washington Township is the only one that does not contain a city or village within its borders with 1800 residents calling it home. With its easy interstate access, Washington Township’s wide-open spaces are being discovered by homeowners looking for an escape from hectic urban life. The leading industry here is tourism with visitors exploring Ft. Ancient, the Little Miami River and nearby outdoor pursuits.
Transportation
Access through Washington Township is primarily via I-71, with U.S. Rt. 22, and St. Rts. 350 and 3 bisecting the rest of the township. The Greater Cincinnati International Airport is an hour away by car. Or, one can fly out of the Dayton International Airport to the north off of I-71.
Hospitals
Bethesda Medical Center at Arrow Springs just north of the township offers nearby state-of-the-art outpatient medical care, including 24-hour emergency services and comprehensive diagnostic testing. A few minutes south on I-71 is Bethesda North TriHealth Hospital, one of the area’s largest and busiest hospitals. Children’s Hospital Medical Center offers a regional campus just a short drive in nearby Mason. Most of the township is served by the Clinton-Warren Joint Fire District. North of I-71 is served by the Wayne Township Fire Department and the southwestern area of Washington Township is served by the Salem-Morrow Fire Department.
Shopping
With no central shopping district in the township, you’ll need a short car ride to reach stores in nearby Lebanon, Waynesville or Morrow. A short drive south on I-71 and you will arrive at Kenwood Towne Centre with its 100+ national-brand stores plus Nordstrom, Macy’s and Dilliard’s.
Recreation
Nestled in the Little Miami River Valley, Washington Township offers a number of outdoor recreation possibilities. The Little Miami River is a designated state and national scenic river that offers canoeing, kayaking and fishing in the most beautiful setting in southwestern Ohio. The Little Miami Scenic Trail is a 60-mile paved multi-purpose pathway through southwest Ohio that offers year-round exercise, excitement and outdoor adventure. Just minute’s away, Caesar Creek State Park and the Pioneer Village are popular regional destinations for camping, boating and swimming trips. Camp Kern, located near Ft. Ancient, is a popular destination for area school and scout groups.
Warren County itself has active sporting and entertainment venues to keep residents happy. From Kings Island amusement park to The Beach and the Great Wolf Lodge in nearby Mason, there is plenty to do during warmer months.
Morgans Canoe Livery is a great place to camp and go canoeing. Olive Branch Campground is located within the township and is a scenic place to camp. Its 25 acres has room for RVs, an outdoor pool, play areas and a catch-and-release fishing pond.
