Sidney is located in Shelby County and has 21,000 residents. The city is named after Sir Phillip Sidney, an English poet. Many of the city’s schools are name after famous writers: Emerson, Longfellow and Whittier, for example. The area historically served as the the hunting grounds for the Shawnee and Miami Indians. In the 1800s Sidney utilized the canal system (Miami-Erie) for transportation previous to the installation of railroads.
Sidney earned the 1964 All-America City Award which recognizes citizens who work together. The city was the subject of the award-winning 2009 documentary film “45365” which showcased everyday life in the city. One finds homes of all price ranges and styles in Sidney.
Transportation
US 25 (County Rd 25A) runs north and south through downtown Sidney. I-75 is the major interstate serving the area with four interchanges along this highway. Sidney is 40 miles north of Dayton, Ohio, 85 miles west of Columbus, Ohio . The city is serviced by the Sidney Municipal Airport. Dayton International Airport is 35 miles south.
Hospitals
Wilson Memorial Hospital services the city. Upper Valley Medical Center is located south of Piqua.
Shopping
There are many local and national shops and restaurants to enjoy in Sidney. The iconic SPOT restaurant was built in 1941 and is a popular diner. There are several shopping strip centers in Sidney as well as a Walmart.
Recreation
The city plan was developed in the 1950s with the intention of having a park or recreational area within a half-mile of each residence, Thus, Sidney has 14 neighborhood parks, a baseball complex, soccer area, city swimming pool as well as Tawawa Park which offers 192 acres. The annual County Concert is held in July. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy Lake Loramie, Kiser Lake, Indian Lake and Grand Lake St. Marys. There are season events held at the downtown square including band concerts, farmer’s market and the Kids Around the Square Festival. The Winter Wonderland Parade kicks off the winter season. The Shelby County Fair is in July. The Sidney-Shelby County YMCA offers all kinds of recreation opportunities from tennis to a fitness center. The Shelby Oaks Gold Course has 27 holes.
